The UAE Golden Visa, through business ownership: who actually qualifies
The 10-year Golden Visa is the most searched immigration term in the UAE, and the most misquoted when it comes to business owners. "Set up a company, get a Golden Visa" is not how it works. There are specific routes, specific thresholds, and a requirement that trips up almost everyone: the business has to actually operate.
The business and entrepreneur routes
| Route | Threshold | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| Business investor | Company capital ≥ AED 2,000,000 | Ownership stake in an operating UAE company |
| Established SME owner | Annual revenue ≥ AED 1,000,000 | A real trading history, not a newly licensed shell |
| Startup founder | Project valued ≥ AED 500,000 | Endorsement from an accredited UAE incubator or accelerator |
| Exited founder | Prior startup sold for ≥ AED 7,000,000 | Proof of sale, or a registered innovation patent |
| Public investment / tax route | ≥ AED 250,000 in federal tax paid per year | Company tax compliance with the Federal Tax Authority |
Thresholds reflect current 2026 guidance from the routes published by the UAE authorities. Some routes are evaluated case by case, and the exact documentation accepted (audited financials, bank statements, tax certificates) varies, we confirm the current requirement for your specific route before you apply.
The part almost nobody mentions: a license isn't a business
Holding a trade license, on its own, is not sufficient for the business or entrepreneur routes. Immigration authorities are explicitly looking for an operational presence: real revenue moving through the company, a real office or flexi-desk, and in many cases, real activity history. A freshly incorporated free zone company with no trading history will not clear the SME or investor route, no matter how much capital sits in its bank account on day one.
The Golden Visa rewards businesses that are already running. If yours isn't yet, the honest move is to build the operating history first, not to pay someone to "guarantee" an application that doesn't meet the bar.
What we actually do before recommending a route
- Check whether your current structure (revenue, capital, tax paid) genuinely matches one of the five routes above.
- Flag if you're close but not there yet, and what specifically needs to change first.
- Tell you plainly if a Golden Visa application right now would likely be rejected, rather than taking the fee and letting you find out from immigration.
Common misconceptions, corrected
- "Any free zone license qualifies." No, the license needs to sit inside a company that meets one of the five thresholds above.
- "It's a one-time payment and you're guaranteed approval." No consultant can guarantee a government immigration decision. Anyone who says otherwise is misleading you.
- "You need AED 2 million in cash." Only the investor route requires that specific capital threshold, the other four routes are based on revenue, project value, exit value, or tax paid, not a cash deposit.
